The 5th Annual Festival of Trees
The Festival of Trees is a charity fundraising event supported by the Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with our local businesses and organizations. For three days following the Night Light Parade, our local businesses and organizations come together to display (or auction) Christmas trees. The effect of having more than 30 Christmas trees lit up in one place is quite breath taking, and definitely puts you in the Christmas spirit! The display is open to the public Thursday night, following the nightlight parade as well as Friday & Saturday. All proceeds raised from the door entry and tree auction are presented to local charities and non-profit organizations. Since 2010 we have raised a total of $7349; we hope to inspire and support the Vermilion area for many more years. Please include us as a MUST ATTEND event this holiday season, we hope to see you there!

Small Business Week is a national celebration of Canadian entrepreneurs and their contribution to Canada’s economy. The Chambers throughout Alberta have been organizing Small Business Week activities for 33 years. It takes place every year during the third full week of October. Events held during the week bring together entrepreneurs—and prospective entrepreneurs—at conferences, workshops, luncheons and awards dinners aroundAlberta. One of the goals is to provide them with opportunities to learn, network, share ideas and socialize with their peers. The other goal is to recognize those businesses that are outstanding in their fields.
We encourage you, as you go about your daily routines, to think of nominating the businesses that you are visiting for an award. These awards are handed out in October, and show just how much we appreciate our Vermilion and Area Businesses. So think outside the box: is your hairdresser an “Employee of the Year”? was the caterer at the wedding you attended a “Business of the Year”? who represents the “Spirit of Vermilion” to you?

Over the past 20 years Candy Cane Countdown has been a vital part of how Christmas is celebrated in the Vermilion Area. For the past 10 years it has been the Candy Cane Countdown passports. These little festive brochures do double duty. First they are a handy schedule for most of the Christmas events happening in and around Vermilion. Second they are your entry form for the $2000 Candy Cane Countdown draw. As you do your Christmas shopping get your passport stamped by participating merchants. Once the passport is full, fill out your name, address, phone number, and drop it in one of the draw boxes around town. Enter as many times as you want keeping in mind the more you shop the more entries you have available and the better your chances at winning.
The much anticipated Night Light Parade is the perfect way to start the Christmas season. One of a few night light parades in Canada this parade has both children and adults bundling up and braving the cold to see all the beautifully decorated and lit-up floats pass by. The parade starts at Lakeland Mall leads to the Senior Center through the heart of Vermilion. After the parade come in out of the cold and marvel in wonder at the beautifully decorated trees setup at the Festival of Trees. This wonderful; and vital event is a recent addition to Vermilions Christmas season, but it is a definitely a destination for the whole family.
The December 6 winner was: Tannis Henderson
The December 13 winner was Cathy Klatt.
The grand prize winner was Lubie Parchewsky.

The Annual General Meeting is a great afternoon that combines fun and work. After an amazing lunch, you will get to hear from a remarkable speaker who I guarantee will leave you with something to think about. Then the hard work begins, sort of, electing and swearing new members to the board of executive, and thanking those members who are resigning. As I said hard work, it turns out to be a very productive couple of hours as well as being a good time not to be missed.
Join us next year for the 108th Anniversary of the Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce. Since 1906 our community has showed continued support for the businesses in our area. The AGM is an important part of that support as it allows members to contribute to the direction and representation of the Chamber for the upcoming year. The new board members will be elected as well as any new bylaws will be passed.
The speaker at this year’s Annual General Meeting was amazing. Her name is Wendy Schneider from Green Hectares, an entrepreneurial company focussed on the agriculture sector. It was founded in 2008 by young leaders passionate about agriculture. They work closely with municipalities, companies and governments to build vibrant communities and sustainability in the agriculture industry.
We’re excited about the changes and the direction our new board seems to be leading us in. Amin Tran the new owner of lakeland glass was elected as the president. we would also like to thank Scott Kovatch who has moved into the past president position for his time and dedication over the past year.
Please call the Chamber to reserve your tickets for next year.

Come out and join us for our Women’s Conference. What started out as a secretaries day event has grown and turned into so much more. This daylong event is now a fun and revitalizing conference for all women from stay at home mom’s to office staff. Every year there are phenomenal speakers talking about some amazing and relevant topics for all in attendance. And let us not forget the superb tradeshow that caters specifically to women. Yes ma’am this event has grown since its conception in 2008 to become one of the best female centered networking and development events in the area.
This year we have three amazing speakers for the women’s conference. First we have Brenda Robinson whose amazing comedic outlook on life will help you find the joy, fun, and excitement in everyday life; she will also be our emcee for the day. We also have Shirley Borrelli speaking on “Business Casual Made Easy” helping all of us look stylish and appropriate while still affording to pay the rent. And last but most assuredly not least our Keynote speaker is Mairlyn Smith. She is a Professional Home Economist and an award winning Co-author, and she will be talking to us about “Healthy Eating for People on the Go”. This already sounds like an amazing day and I haven’ even gotten to all the amazing vendors at the women’s tradeshow. We’ll have companies like: Lia Sophia, Jockey Person to Person, and Fadz n Funks Purses there to make breaks that much better. Now don’t you want to print off a registration form and sign up for this amazing event?
