Festival of Trees

Celebrate five years of Festival of Trees November 27-29! After the Night Light Parade concludes, come into the Senior Citizen’s Centre to see both display and auction trees. The trees are on display until 9:00 p.m. Thursday night, 10-7 p.m. on Friday, and 10- 5 p.m. on Saturday.

New this year is a Wine & Cheese event on Friday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Enjoy a glass of wine for $3.00 and sample cheese as you delight in the Festival of Trees atmosphere. It’s an elegant way to spend the evening for only $5.00.

Biding on the silent auction trees will close at 4:30 on Saturday. In 2013, over $3600 was raised between the donations made at the door, auction bids and registration fees! Over the last 4 years, $10,985 has been raised for local charities and Santa’s Anonymous.  Thank you for the generous community spirit!

The Great Gatsby Tree created by JR Robson High School made such a big impression it won the People’s Choice Award last year. Who will you vote for this year?

Please contact the Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce at 780-853-6593 for additional information.

October 19-25, 2014

Small Business Week is a national celebration of Canadian entrepreneurs and their contribution to Canada’s economy. The Chambers throughout Alberta have been organizing Small Business Week activities for 33 years.  It takes place every year during the third full week of October. Events held during the week bring together entrepreneurs—and prospective entrepreneurs—at conferences, workshops, luncheons and awards dinners aroundAlberta.  One of the goals is to provide them with opportunities to learn, network, share ideas and socialize with their peers.  The other goal is to recognize those businesses that are outstanding in their fields.

We encourage you, as you go about your daily routines, to think of nominating the businesses that you are visiting for an award.  These awards are handed out in October, and show just how much we appreciate our Vermilion and Area Businesses.  So think outside the box:  is your hairdresser an “Employee of the Year”? was the caterer at the wedding you attended a “Business of the Year”? who represents the “Spirit of Vermilion” to you?

Nomination Form for 2014

Every year the Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce hosts two events for Small Business Week, the Kick-off Breakfast and the Awards Luncheon. Both are a great time of food and networking. The Breakfast is also a great opportunity to sit and talk with community leaders in an informal inviroment. The Luncheon is were it all comes together, it is a wonderful time to get together and show our appreciation to all our wonderful bussinesses.

Please take the time to congratulate the winners and to check out all those who were nominated.  It is a very impressive list of businesses and employees.

Celebrate the Christmas season with Candy Cane Countdown

November 27-December 19

The Night Light Parade is one of our favourite ways to celebrate the holiday season. We are fortunate to have one of only a few night light parades in Canada. Enjoy the enchantingly decorated floats with your family on Thursday, November 27. The parade begins at 7:00 p.m. at Lakeland Mall, curving through the downtown core on its way to the Senior Citizen’s Centre. After the parade, come in from the cold to enjoy the 5th Annual Festival of Trees. All proceeds from the Festival of Trees support local charities such as Santa’s Anonymous.

Another great way to support Santa’s Anonymous is the Tree Buddy program. Participating merchants will have trees with tags stating the age range of a boy or girl. Attach the tag to an appropriate gift to donate. Your donation can make a little boy or girl’s Christmas magical this year.

In addition to listing local holiday events, the Candy Cane Countdown Shopper’s Passport is your entry form for a $2000 draw. Local participating merchants will stamp your passport as you do your holiday shopping. Drop your completed passport into one of the draw boxes around town. Need some motivation to get your shopping started? December 6th & 13th are early bird draws for $250 Chamber Bucks. Do you need to buy a big-ticket item? December 5th & 12th are double stamp days. The more you shop, the higher your chances to win of the draws. Just one of the many benefits of shopping local!

The Annual General Meeting is a great afternoon that combines fun and work. After an amazing lunch, you will get to hear from a remarkable speaker who I guarantee will leave you with something to think about. Then the hard work begins, sort of, electing and swearing new members to the board of executive, and thanking those members who are resigning. As I said hard work, it turns out to be a very productive couple of hours as well as being a good time not to be missed.

Join us next year for the 108th Anniversary of the Vermilion & District Chamber of Commerce.  Since 1906 our community has showed continued support for the businesses in our area.  The AGM is an important part of that support as it allows members to contribute to the direction and representation of the Chamber for the upcoming year.  The new board members will be elected as well as any new bylaws will be passed.

The speaker at this year’s Annual General Meeting was amazing. Her name is Wendy Schneider from Green Hectares, an entrepreneurial company focussed on the agriculture sector. It was founded in 2008 by young leaders passionate about agriculture. They work closely with municipalities, companies and governments to build vibrant communities and sustainability in the agriculture industry.

Please call the Chamber to reserve your tickets for next year.

Come out and join us for our Women’s Conference. What started out as a secretaries day event has grown and turned into so much more. This daylong event is now a fun and revitalizing conference for all women from stay at home mom’s to office staff. Every year there are phenomenal speakers talking about some amazing and relevant topics for all in attendance. And let us not forget the superb tradeshow that caters specifically to women. Yes ma’am this event has grown since its conception in 2008 to become one of the best female centered networking and development events in the area.
